Afterschool Program

The Manhattan Youth Afterschool program at The Clinton School provides a comprehensive menu of activities for students of all interests and middle-school grades. Popular activities are the Clinton Post and Clinton Soup, Cross Country, Basketball, and Cheerleading. See those and the new offerings in the schedule. 

Please note – Afterschool is FREE. There is no cost to participate in any class or sport.

Daily Schedule 

Afterschool activities begin at 2:30. Students have 10 minutes after the final bell to gather their things and get what they need for after-school. Snack and gym sports are provided in the cafeteria and gym starting at 2:30. Students who do not check in with a Manhattan Youth staff member by 2:40 will not be permitted to stay in the school building. Students must stay for a 3:15 after-school class to participate in a 4:30 after-school class.

Attendance 

If you know your child will be absent from After-School, please email the After-School Director. We expect activities to fill up quickly, and for there to be a waiting list. If a student is absent from an activity without a note from a parent/guardian, he/she may lose his/her slot. If a student wishes to change his/her schedule or drop any or all after-school activities, a request must be made in writing by a parent/guardian. Students must not simply stop coming to activities.

Double: Double period classes run for two consecutive periods. To sign up, your student must be able to stay for the full time.

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTIONS: 

This program is funded by the Department of Youth and Community Development as a part of the city’s Comprehensive After-School System (COMPASS) School’s Out NYC (SONYC). Please review activity descriptions and fill out the Universal Participant Intake packet. Packets, along with an up to date medical form can be mailed, e-mailed or hand delivered to Morgan Greer. Completed packets must be received before your student’s first day of after school. At the end of the trimester, students will be able to enroll in different clubs and winter sports teams. Please read your weekly emails for updates about the program.

After-School activities begin at 3:00 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday and 1:00 pm on Wednesday. Free snack is provided in the cafeteria starting at 3:00. Students who do not check in with a Manhattan Youth staff member by 3:15 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and 1:00 on Wednesday will not be permitted to stay in the school building. Students must stay for a 3:15 club to participate in a 4:30 club. Students will be dismissed after their last club of the day. Dismissal times are 3:00, 4:30, and 5:30 pm, and 2:00 on Wednesday. Students will not be permitted to leave at any non-dismissal time for any reason. If you have any questions, please refer to our FAQ page before emailing Morgan at mgreer@manhattanyouth.org.

ADDAMS FAMILY REHEARSAL: All Clinton students are invited to audition for the annual spring musical. Auditions will take place on Monday, March 5th from 3:15-5:30 pm. Students must attend all rehearsals both Mondays and Wednesdays. Once leads are selected, they will have an additional rehearsal on Fridays.

ADDAMS FAMILY TECHNICAL THEATER: Want to get your hands dirty building sets, sewing costumes, or working backstage? Join technical theater to work behind the scenes to make sure the musical goes off without a hitch!

ANIME DRAWING CLUB: Fans of manga and anime look no further! Students will come together each week to discuss, draw and share anime.

CHEERLEADING: Learn cheers and acrobatic routines to perform at middle school athletic events. Students will generate school spirit and support of their school teams.

CHESS: Learn the basics of the game and play chess against your friends as you compete in a school-wide chess tournament.

CLINTON & 75 MORTON POST: Become a student journalist as you report on events both in and out of school. Editors and cartoonists also welcome!

CLINTON & 75 MORTON SOUP: Our creative writing magazine is published three times a year. If you have a short story, poem, drawing, or other creative contribution that you want to share with the world, this is the place for you.

CLINTON YEARBOOK: Work together to create Clinton’s annual yearbook. Learn design, photography and writing skills.

CLUB HOPE: Do you want to Help Other People Every day? Join Club H.O.P.E. to plan your own service activities to help your community!

CODING: Students will be introduced to a variety of aspects of computer science including graphic design, programming (Java & Scratch) and game design as well as some basic knowledge of the physical machine.

COMIC BOOK ART: Write, draw, storyboard, and publish a comic book of your own making, all under the guidance of a professional comic book artist.

COOKING: Learn the science behind culinary skills as you create mouth-watering dishes to share with family and friends.  

CREATION STATION: Come out for Creation Station- a new club where you can conduct your own scientific experiments and build your own inventions.  

CREATIVE MINDING: Students will learn critical thinking and discussion skills in this club that is a mix of debate and creative writing, while exploring topics that are relevant to them right now.  

DANCE: A comprehensive dance class where you can learn hip hop, modern, jazz and contemporary dance.

DEBATE: Practice research and presentation skills as you develop, write and present arguments on relevant topics of the day.

DIY: In this Do it Yourself class, you will explore your creativity to produce, transform and reconstruct material possessions into creative crafts you can display at home or at use in school.

FASHION ARTS: Learn the basics of fabric and design as you conceive, sketch and create your own wearable fashion pieces.

FILMMAKING: Channel your inner movie star as you write, film, direct, edit, and produce an original film.

GLEE CLUB: Come and sing your heart out with all of the chart-topping hits! Glee Club develops your musical voice.

GRAPHIC DESIGN: Explore the basics of graphic design through project-based learning. Students will develop an understanding of color theory and typography.

GYMNASTICS: Power hurdle, round-off step out, backhand spring tuck and more. Our gymnasts will train to increase their flexibility and strength and gain coaching skills.

IMPROV: This class will blend performance and creative writing skills as well as teach critical thinking and problem solving as students learn to work together to create improv scenes off the top of their heads.

JIU JITSU: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, combat sport, and self-defense system that focuses on grappling and strength. Come learn about the origins of this ancient sport, along with its fundamentals and techniques, including strategy, self-control, and flexibility.

JUST CRAFTING AROUND: Get crafty and express your creativity while making art that you can show off to your friends! From tie dye to maracas, this class will bring out the artist in you!

LOCATION ART: Students will explore Union Square and surrounding area for inspiration. They will use this inspiration to create visual artwork outside.

MAD SCIENCE: Love doing wacky science experiments? Join this club to get your hands dirty and learn about science through fun, hands-on activities.

MATH COUNTS: Join Math Counts to work on math problems with your friends while preparing for national competitions!

MINECRAFT CHALLENGE: Explore your favorite video game in a new way. Work with other students to conquer challenges, complete missions and build personal projects in Minecraft.

MOVIE CLUB: Get the weekend started early by relaxing in a movie with friends!

MUSIC PRODUCTION: Want to be a DJ? Using music software and technology, you will learn about music theory, composition, and production while producing your own album tracks!

NYC EXPLORERS: Explore and experience the rich history of New York’s most famous island! Join us as we journey across Manhattan to discover the secrets hiding right before our eyes! Students will alternate classroom and field trip activities.

OPEN GYM: Students will free play in the gym. Students are welcome to play structured or unstructured games alone or in groups.

PARKOUR: Are you the next Ninja Warrior? Obstacles to train your agility and coordination will be challenging and fun as participants have fun taking risks, reaching their goals, and supporting one another.

PHOTOGRAPHY: Want to up your Instagram game? Learn the basics of photography, from composition to exposure in this fun new class!

RECESS GAMES: Play outdoor, structured games on the roof, and indoor board games when it’s rainy.

SPA SCIENCE: Every wondered what is in your favorite lip balm or lotion? Come find out and make your own products while learning the science behind these and other popular products.

STOP MOTION ANIMATION: Use a variety of common materials to create original short films, one frame at a time.

STRATEGY GAMES: Strategy games make logical thinking fun and competitive. The games will require different methods of thinking, allowing students to develop problem solving skills through teamwork.

STUDY LAB: Study Lab is a self-guided, quiet environment where students will be able to work independently on their homework. Students are responsible for knowing their assignments and completing them in a timely manner.

PORTFOLIO ART: Prepare your visual art portfolio for high school admission with a professional artist!

URBAN FARM: Interested in growing your own food? Join this club to learn how to grow your own indoor garden!

VIDEO GAME DESIGN: Who doesn’t love video games? Join this club to make your own! Learn coding skills to make games that your friends can play.

WRESTLING: Learn the basics of wresting in this coed club. The club will culminate in a season ending friendly competition between schools. We are offering two sessions of double periods- you may choose EITHER the 1-3 OR the 3:30-5:30 timeslot.

YOGA: Come learn the basics of yoga through poses and breathing exercises. Students will also develop their mindfulness to learn how to incorporate healthy habits into everyday life.
